Title: My Mom’s Motorcycle
Runtime: 6 min
Country: USA
Director: Douglas Gautraud
Placement: Award of Merit
Competition: December, 2015

Synopsis: This is the story about how my mom became the owner of a motorcycle. More deeply it is about how we connect to people, places, events, and ideas through objects.

DIRECTOR Q&A

OR: What was the inspiration for your film?

DG: My mom bought my motorcycle from me and I found it strange that she was now the owner of a 1973 Honda cb 175. So I just asked, “how did this happen?” and the film came from that.

OR: When did you conceive the idea for your film and how long did it take before it was realized?

DG: I started writing the film in 2013 and it took over a year to finish writing and producing it.

OR: What was the most challenging aspect of working in a short film format?

DG: There is a certain magic that happens over hours and hours of editing and rewriting where you keep taking away bits and pieces until you’ve reached the essential aspects of your film; at this point all that taking away has actually added beauty. Getting to that point is the hardest thing.

OR: What was the most challenging aspect of your production?

DG: Doing it almost entirely by myself.

OR: Do you have any advice for first-time filmmakers?

DG: Don’t wait for the perfect opportunity; just make a film right now, if it’s no good, make another one. Repeat and refine until there is gold.
